Today Facts about France presents:Cathedrale Notre-Dame

Notre-Dame is on the Ile de la Cite, the historical heart of Paris.
It is famous for its sculptures, grotesque gargoyles, and stained glass.
Built on a Roman temple the first stone for the church was laid down in 1163 .With its 69 meter high towers it is still impressive today.Throughout the centuries, the cathedral has not changed much. Most serious was the devastation of 1793, when during the French Revolution the cathedral was turned into a "Temple of Reason". But already in 1804, Napoleon crowned himself and Josephine in the presence of the pope Pius VII in the Notre-Dame cathedral.

If you visit the cathedral, be sure to hike up the seemingly-endless spiral stairs to the top to get a close-up look of the gargoyles and a grand view of the city and the Seine River.Outside the cathedral is the markation point from which the distance to all cities in France is measured.

Orange in France Loses IPhone Exclusivity

The iPhone will no longer be available for just Orange subscribers in France after a decision by the national competition council announced Wednesday.
The council in September received a complaint from Bouygues Telecom, which, of course, is welcoming the decision, and will launch the iPhone as soon as possible, the company said.

iPhone

The decision will also affect Orange's role as a wholesaler for distribution of the iPhone, and also the distribution contracts proposed by Apple obliging resellers to distribute the iPhone only with an Orange network contract, according to the council.
Orange will appeal before the Court of Appeal in Paris.
Ending the exclusive deal between Apple and Orange will give subscribers more choice, both when they choose a mobile phone and operator, according to Bouygues.
Orange, on the other hand, says that the decision undermines it's efforts to develop high-speed mobile services in France. It also lashes out at Bouygues, saying that it's ironic that the operator most behind in terms of rolling out its 3G network initiated this complaint.
It also fires away at the council, saying that council action was taken without any in-depth examination of the situation.
Orange has so far sold about 450,000 3G iPhones and another 150,000 of the first generation model

Dynamite found in Paris store

France began beefing up security across the country Tuesday after an unknown group placed dynamite in a Paris department store and threatened more attacks if French troops were not pulled out of Afghanistan.

Police located and made safe the five sticks of dynamite placed in a washroom in the giant Printemps store on Boulevard Haussmann, one of Europe's busiest shopping streets.

Paris

The boulevard was cordoned off for several hours while hordes of Christmas shoppers and tourists were evacuated.

A group calling itself the Afghan Revolutionary Front sent a letter to AFP warning of "several bombs" in the upscale store and demanding that France withdraw its 2,600 troops by the end of February.

Paris

Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said police reinforcements would be deployed in Paris and major Afghan Revolutionary Front following the discovery of the dynamite.
Executives from Printemps Haussmann, which has 2,000 employees and gets about 100,000 customers a day, were due to take part in the midday meeting in Paris along with other store heads.

Beaujolais Wine Information

Beaujolais is very light, fruity, and easy to drink. It typically has aromas of pear, banana, and like smells. Because of its easy drinkability, there is a lot of cheap, jug wine - normally served in 46cl
containers. On the other hand, the Crus produce fine quality, crafted wines. Beaujolais Nouveau is the first output from each harvest - ready exactly on the Third Thursday of November each year. It's a celebration across the world, as people gather to taste the first Beaujolais of the new season.

Beaujolais Wine Information

Around half of Beaujolais is from Bas Beaujolais, at 10% alcohol. A small amount is Beaujolais Superieur, 10.5% alcohol. One quarter is Beaujolais-Villages, and the remainder is split between other varietals. Beaujolais has a distinct wine making method - a combination of carbonic maceration and chaptalization, or adding sugar to boost the alcohol content.

Beaujolais Wine Information

How long can you keep a Beaujolais for? Beaujolais Nouveau should be drunk IMMEDIATELY - it is barely even wine, being released so soon after the harvest. Most Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages should be drunk within 2 years. Some of the best crus can last 3, and some made in more 'traditional' winemaking styles could last up to 10 years if it's a really good vintage.

Louvre-Paris

Louvre is one of the largest and most visited museums in the world, and possibly the most famous of them all, the Louvre is one of Paris's many must-visits.

Louvre-Paris

Situated in the heart of Paris, this palace is both from an architectural point of view as from an arts perspective one of the must see sights in Paris. It displays about 35,000 works of art, among them some world-famous like the Mona Lisa from Leonardo da Vinci,Venus de Milo and Winged Victory.

Louvre-Paris

The Louvre was built in several stages. It was first built in the sixteenth century when the Royal family started to move near the fortress of the Louvre. The original keep was then destroyed and it was replaced by a palace. The main architect was Pierre Lescot, who was appointed in 1546 by the king. The immense building had 2 courtyards and was 2 stories high. Its architecture combines French and Italian features.

Louvre-Paris

The latest addition to the Louvre was the glass pyramid entrance, one of the finest examples of a combination of modern and historic architecture. On request of the late French President Mitterrand, it was designed by the renowned American architect I.M. Pei. The glass pyramid allows the sunlight to come in on the underground floor.

French Cuisine

Despite a common pan-gallic chauvinism, French cooking is not a monolith: it ranges from the olives and seafood of Provence to the butter and roasts of Tours, from the simple food of the bistro to the fanciful confections of the Tour d'Argent. However, it all shares a seriousness about food.

French Cuisine

French cooking involves a large number of techniques, some extremely complicated, that serve as basics. Any cook will tell you that French food will not tolerate shortcuts in regard to these fundamentals.

French Cuisine

The French are predominantly Catholic and thus have no eating prohibitions, though many dishes have a Lenten variation. Moreover, the Gauls are not afraid to eat anything. Kidney, brain, sweetbreads, tripe, blood sauces and sausages, sheep's foot, tongue, and intestines are all common in French cooking and hold equal standing with the meat of lamb, beef, pork, poultry, and game. Quite the opposite of being exotic, these foods are at the heart of the bourgeois menu, with seafood inevitably being the soul, and vegetables, the flesh.
